The 2019 Minnesota State Fair is here!! I was able to visit yesterday with my husband and we spent quite a bit of leisurely time just people watching, enjoying each other’s company, and eating! We ate a lot!
We are so lucky that our fair has a ton of great gluten-free and even celiac-safe options. Please don’t be worried about leaving hungry – I promise you won’t.
I posted on my Instagram page about all what we ate (go and check out my Instagram story highlights for MN State Fair) and I got quite a few responses from people asking for my own personal list of what I would eat/not eat at the fair. I just figured I’d put it all in a blog post so the everyone can see it and then I don’t have to go through and message everyone one by one.
So, first, the Twin Cities R.O.C.K. (Raising Our Celiac Kids) group does a ton of work for our community and they send out a questionnaire to all of the vendors at the fair asking if they offer gluten-free options. If the vendors respond (not everyone responds) then they are added to a master list and R.O.C.K. shares that with everyone. This is my third year going to the fair with Celiac Disease and from my past experience (and asking lots of questions of the vendors) I have created my own list of what I will/will not eat at the fair. Of course, this is just my own personal list and I want you to still make your own decisions about what you feel safe eating.
I want to share something with you all – I do not get physically sick when I eat gluten. I think I may be one of the “lucky” ones that doesn’t have immediate reactions. Do you know what that means for the choices I make – ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! I am as strict as they come. I avoid gluten like the plague. Cross-contamination is serious business to me. And I would never, ever, ever recommend something to you that has the potential for cross-contamination or that I wouldn’t consume myself.
I was very, very, very sick when I was diagnosed in 2017. That was from the accumulative damage from eating gluten without knowing I had Celiac Disease. It is so important for me to never get back to that place again. With that said…

And I’m sure you’re curious about what my favorite foods at the fair are! My top three favorites (in no particular order) are The Original Pickle Dog, the new Sota Sandwich from BRIM, and the Shrimp and Grits Fritters from Funky Grits!
Enjoy the fair! The food is definitely one of the highlights so I hope this helps you leave full and happy and feel like you aren’t missing out on anything!
Let me know what your favorite foods were this year!
